PS5 - The lowdown

Amazingly, it has been 7 years since the release of the Playstation 4, and gamers everywhere are at a fever pitch awaiting the Playstation 5. The current release date for the new console is November 12th, and it is expected to sell out fast in the upcoming holiday season!

Is it worth the hype?

So, let us start off with the basics. There are two different types of Playstation 5 console on offer, the standard edition, and the digital edition. The difference is relatively explanatory, the digital edition does not have a disc drive, and therefore cannot play any physical media, whereas the standard edition has the disc drive.

Moving on from the different types there is a lot to like about this new console. Firstly, the design has received a significant upgrade from the previous models, where Sony has been struggling to re-imagine the same all black design for years on end. The all-black console has come wrapped in a white futuristic curved design encapsulating the console.

Sony has also confirmed that the PS5 (Standard Edition) is able to support Blu-Ray and 8k video. It also comes with backward compatibility with the PS4 games, which is always a hold your breath moment, as you do not want to have to re-stock all those games again…

Now we are getting more in-depth into this new gaming system, as we look to the storage capabilities. Sony is pinning a lot of its hopes for the success of this console on the speed of the new SSD (Solid State Drive).

The bespoke SSD is effectively the most valuable part of the console. The idea behind this SSD is so that data can be transferred to the different components within the system as fast as possible. This can therefore ensure that the system boots up in seconds and it will wipe out the need for those pesky loading screens whenever gaming or streaming! This faster SSD also opens up huge possibilities for developers, as more data can be accessed at a faster rate than any previous release.

The controller has also received a design and capability revamp to go with the new console. The new Dualsense controller has upgraded rumble technology to increase touch reactions within games. This gives players a greater feeling of inclusion within the moment of each gaming action.

The controller also comes with an in-built microphone, which will enable players to speak with friends, or fearsome enemies, without the need for headphones or additional accessories.

Did someone mention accessories?

Sony has announced some additional accessories that can be bought alongside the console. Firstly, we have been introduced to a new headset which matches the design of the curved white shell. Wireless and noise-canceling, you can truly become immersed in the game, without your immediate neighbors also had to join you!

A full HD camera has also been announced, ensuring you can capture all your gameplay moments in crisp smooth HD.

Finally, a media remote has been added to the inventory for this new release, so that you can seamlessly control your console. You can jump between your favorite TV series or your favorite game at the click of a button.

Does the PS5 take gaming to a new level?

In short, it is difficult to know without experiencing it first-hand. If the promises made by Sony regarding its speed and potential gaming capabilities, then this console will set the standard for years to come. Even if the capabilities fall short it will still be a welcomed update on the Playstation 4, which is fast becoming a tech relic.
